Maharatna status for Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL)?

The state-run power equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is likely to get the Maharatna status said the Praful Patel, the Heavy Industries Minister in New Delhi on Friday.

At present there are four Maharatna status holding companies in India viz., the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Indian Oil and Steel Authority of India Limited SAIL). BHEL will be fifth company to get the status of Maharatna.

BHEL has been making average profit of Rs. 3,433 crore for last three years while in 2009-10, the turnover of the BHEL was Rs. 33,173.34 crore.
