Turkey shoots down Russian Fighter Jet; Putin terms ‘stab in back’

Vladimir Putin
In a major setback to anti-terrorism operations, a Russian warplane was shot down by Turkish F16s on Tuesday in Syrian border. President of Russia Vladimir Putin termed it as ‘stab in the back’ and he warned there would be serious consequences over Russia-Turkey relations.

Two pilots however ejected from the fighter plane, which hit the ground after it was shot down by Turkish F16s. As per the latest reports, one pilot was reportedly killed while parachuting from the flight while another was reportedly under captive.

This incident is going to be a big blow for the anti-terrorism operations as being a NATO nation, Turkey. Media reports suggest that the plane was on Syrian border when it was shot down. The tension between Russia and Turkey could escalate further following this incident. However, Turkey clarified in the NATO’s governing body meeting, which was convened after the fighter plane was shot down, that the Russian war plan violated Turkey airspace.

Over these allegations, Russia denied that the plan did not violate Turkey airspace.

CONFORTIS INTERNATIONAL Inc
LOME, Togo, 12 October 2015 --  CONFORTIS INTERNATIONAL Inc.  (www.confortis.org) is investing sustainably in Togo by building « WellCity », a new city where the Togolese middle class will be able to buy " good quality, ecological housing, at competitive prices and on repayment terms that are manageable in the long term, " announced architect Dontou Hiloukou Derou, founder of the group and  CEO of CONFORTIS INTERNATIONAL Inc.

On October 2, the showroom of this very innovative building complex was inaugurated in the Palm Beach Taba building, downtown Lome, by the Togolese Minister of Urban Development, Housing and the Living Environment, Me Fiatuwo Kwadjo Sessenou. The event, during which the minister symbolically cut a ribbon, was attended by several dignitaries including the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic, Mr. Patrick Date Tevi-Benissan. The minister promised to accelerate the delivery of basic networks, saying that "WellCity is an innovative project that meets the vision of the Head of State, because it solves the problem of decent housing and prevents land disputes."

Located on the outskirts of Greater Lome, 30 minutes north of downtown, on the National No. 1 road, this "City of well Being" will offer 500 housing units (200 villas and 300 apartments) in its first phase and then a further one thousand lodgings with a water park, a MICE hotel, a school, a clinic, a shopping center and 10,000 m2 of offices and shops. "Yesterday, the contemporary world experienced industrial cities. Today we have the second generation of cities that are business cities (Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore). Tomorrow, the third generation of cities will focus on well-being and ecology,” stated architect Dontou Hiloukou Derou, who is also the designer of the WellCity project.

According to its promoters, the three essential assets of WellCity are in the land title it offers, in the standardization of its dwellings with a monitoring of the quality of its materials and finally, in the possibility to benefit from a fifteen year refundable credit at subsidized rates. "WellCity was designed to facilitate access to property for the middle class. If the Togolese State grants us the necessary facilities throughout the construction chain, it will be possible to offer very competitive prices", the group CEO promised.

INS Trikand Visits Istanbul, Turkey

INS Trikand Visits Istanbul, Turkey
As a part of Indian Navy’s overseas deployment to West Asia, Africa and Europe, INS Trikand entered Istanbul today 04 Oct 15 for a three day visit. During her stay in Istanbul the ship will engage extensively with the Turkish Navy. Apart from professional interactions, a number of sports and social engagements are also planned, which would go a long way in enhancing co-operation and understanding towards mutually beneficial issues of maritime interest.

Indian naval ships are regularly deployed as part of the Indian Navy’s mission of building ‘bridges of friendship’ and strengthening international cooperation with friendly countries as well as to address maritime concerns of the region including piracy in the Gulf of Aden. In addition, Indian Navy has also been involved in capacity building and capability enhancement of friendly navies in the Indian Ocean Region, besides providing assistance in hydrographic survey, search and rescue and improving maritime domain awareness. A notable recent employment of the Indian Navy was for the evacuation of over 3000 Indians and citizens from 35 other countries from strife-ridden Yemen(in April 2015).

India and Turkey share deep historical connections. The bilateral relations have been strengthened by exchange of visits by leaders of both countries in recent times. The two countries share common values including commitment to secularism and democratic principles. The current visit seeks to underscore India’s peaceful presence and solidarity with friendly countries and to strengthen the existing bonds between India and Turkey. Bilateral naval relations are expected to strengthen further due to the planned visit of a Turkish warship for the International Fleet Review at Visakhapatnam, India in Feb 2016.

INS Trikand, commanded by Captain Vinay Kalia, is a state-of-the-art warship of the Indian Navy equipped with a versatile range of weapons and sensors capable of addressing threats in all the three dimensions – air, surface and sub-surface. The visiting ship is part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet and is under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, with its Headquarters at Mumbai.

Air China to commence Beijing-Mumbai Nonstop

IN · · Leave a Comment
Air China to commence Beijing-Mumbai Nonstop
Air China will commence Beijing-Mumbai nonstop service on October 25, 2015. As the forthcoming only service from Mainland China to Mumbai, it will spare passengers departing from Beijing for Mumbai the trouble of having to make a detour by transferring in Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok and make it much easier to get to the "Gate of India". The one-way flight takes about seven hours.

As India's largest seaport and an important hub of transportation, Mumbai has earned its reputation as the "Gateway in the West" of India. As India's center of commerce and entertainment, Mumbai is India's response to Manhattan, is home to Bollywood and boasts myriad World Heritage sites like the grottos on Elephant Island. Along the indented coast of the Mumbai Bay is a mixture of traditional and modern buildings, which, like a string of glimmering pearls, make the "Princess of India" even more charming.

As two BRICS countries, China and India have long had close political, economic and people exchanges and in recent years, inbound and outbound travelers of the two countries have been on the rise. From January to November 2014, bilateral trade volume experienced a 9% year-on-year increase. while in September of the same year, the two countries released a joint declaration on exploring new areas of cooperation through strategic economic dialogue and beginning the "China-India Cultural Exchanges Plan". In 2015, the two countries hosted "India Tourism Year" in China, and in 2016 will host 'China Tourism Year" in India. The new Beijing-Mumbai service will go a way towards meeting the ever increasing market demand for air services in the fields of economy, trade, tourism, culture and people exchanges.

In 2015, Air China is continuing to build its world-spanning route network with its hub in Beijing, and, at the same time, with the "One Belt, One Road" Initiative proposed by the Chinese government in mind, has started and will start more routes serving the countries along the "One Belt, One Road". Examples of the routes include Beijing-Minsk-Budapest opened in the first half of the year and Beijing-Islamabad-Karachi, Beijing-Kuala Lumpur, Beijing-Colombo, Beijing-Johannesburg and Beijing-Addis Ababa to be opened this October.

In this new era when China and the countries along the "One Belt, One Road" are jointly mapping out the future for the six major economic corridors, Air China's Beijing-Mumbai service is an important part of the endeavor to build the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Corridor. The service will increase the Asian-Pacific destinations Air China serves to 17, and bring the number of nonstop flights between China and India up to eight a week. It will make it much easier for both Chinese business and leisure travelers departing from Beijing for India to get to Delhi and Mumbai, cities whose developed transportation systems provide easy access to other Indian cities and tourist destinations. At the same time, the service will also offer an additional easy and fast option for travelers to fly from India and other parts of the Asia Pacific region to other parts of the world via Beijing.

US India Business Council applauds Resumption of Cyber Security Dialogue

US India Business Council
Left to Right: Dr. Mukesh Aghi, Dr. Gulshan Rai, Dr. Arvind Gupta, Michael Daniel,
Dr. Andy Ozment, Chris Painter, Joe Alhadeff speak at the U.S.-India Cybersecurity Dialogue Reception

Washington, DC– August 14, 2015 – After a two year hiatus, the long-awaited U.S.-India Cyber Security Dialogue took place in Washington, D.C., this week. The U.S.-India Business Council and industry partners convened the industry portion of the U.S.-India Cyber Security Dialogue on August 10, 2015. Senior business leaders shared their views on cyber challenges with senior Indian and U.S. government officials, including Dr. Arvind Gupta, Deputy National Security Advisor; Dr. Gulshan Rai, Cyber Coordinator, Prime Minister's Office; and Michael Daniel, Special Assistant to the President and Cybersecurity Coordinator, National Security Council, White House; Chris Painter, Coordinator for Cyber Issues, U.S. Department of State.

At the conclusion of the bilateral talks on August 12, 2015, the Council hosted a reception for senior officials from both governments as well as private sector stakeholders. The long-awaited talks build on the January 2015 joint statement between Prime Minister Modi and President Obama that emphasized the need to “… cooperate on enhancing operational sharing of cyber threat information, examining how international law applies in cyberspace, and working together to build agreement on norms of responsible state behavior.”

"The resumption of the dialogue itself is a positive sign. We are hopeful that the governments and industries from both the countries can work together to chart the way forward for a successful U.S.-India partnership in responding to the evolving cyber challenges,” said Arvind Gupta, Deputy National Security Advisor.

Speaking for the United States, Michael Daniel, Special Assistant to the President and Cybersecurity Coordinator, made clear that, “Cybersecurity is fundamentally a team endeavor, and it is essential that international partners like India and the United States work together closely, along with industry and civil society, to raise our cyber defenses in both the short and long term, to disrupt and interrupt malicious actors in cyberspace, and to improve our ability to respond to and recover from cyber threats. I am especially encouraged by India’s recent statements of support for the multistakeholder model of Internet governance, and look forward to a collaborative partnership with our Indian colleagues and our partners from industry and civil society to ensure that the Internet continues to be an open, interoperable, global platform that enables international trade and commerce, strengthens international security, and fosters free expression and innovation.”

Dr. Mukesh Aghi, President of the U.S.-India Business Council said, “As the digital economy continues to develop, the interdependency between governments and businesses will grow. It is in the interest of all parties to continue to engage in dialogues that spur policy developments and economic growth.”

Industry leaders from the United States submitted policy recommendations to the U.S. Government and the Government of India, emphasizing the need to protect cross border data flow, facilitate remote access, provide for strong encryption standards, and reduce cybersecurity threats through targeted public-private partnerships.

“Information and communications technologies and services (ICT) enable innovations that provide economic, social, and cultural benefits to citizens, businesses, and governments around the world. Those same players must also collaborate to enhance cybersecurity, and Microsoft supports the commitment that the U.S. and Indian Governments have made to work together on this priority. Microsoft looks forward to continued engagement with them, including through the Cybersecurity Dialogue, to make meaningful progress on the challenges and opportunities facing our globally-interconnected society,” said Angela McKay, Director, Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy for Microsoft.

“The government’s programs to promote cybersecurity and assure national security are closely tied to the systems and infrastructure which business operates. Consultation with business as early in the process as possible can help assure that such programs are implemented effectively while avoiding needless burdens or unintended consequences to innovation and business operations. Such collaboration is essential to fulfilling the Prime Minister's ambitious programs for India's continued economic growth and societal inclusion,” said Joe Alhadeff, Chair of the Council's Digital Economy Committee.

The event was attended by senior executives from the Council’s member companies that include: Oracle, IBM, Google, Microsoft, Symantec, Intel, AT&T, Cisco, Verizon and Wipro. The Council collaborated with the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) on the industry recommendations that were presented to both governments.

Text of the Press Statement made by the PM Modi Mongolian Parliament
Your Excellency Prime Minister Saikhanbileg

Distinguished members of Mongolian delegation,

Members of the media,

I am delighted to visit Mongolia. It is a great honour to be the first Prime Minister of India to do so.

It is a special privilege to come on the occasion of two important milestones that unite us – 25 years of democracy in Mongolia and 60 years of diplomatic relations between our two countries.

I am deeply grateful for your welcome and hospitality that have touched our hearts. You have embraced us with unlimited generosity and warmth of a true friend.

Your Parliament's decision to host me on a Sunday is a remarkable gesture of honour for India.

I could not have started my visit in a better way. It began with a visit to the historic Gandan Monastery, where I handed over a sapling of the Mahabodhi Tree. This is a token of friendship from the people of India.

I am here in respect and appreciation for our timeless kinship. You have called us your spiritual neighbour and third neighbour. We will always fulfil the responsibility that comes with this honour.

Today, Mongolia is also an integral part of India's Act East Policy. The destinies of India and Mongolia are closely linked with the future of Asia Pacific Region. We can work together to help advance peace, stability and prosperity in this region. So, I am also here in commitment to our shared responsibility to our region.

Prime Minister has spoken eloquently about the relationship and our meeting today. I will have the honour to speak about our vision in the Parliament a little later.

I was very pleased with my discussions with Prime Minister today. We have strong convergence of views on bilateral relations and our regional and international partnership.

The agreements that we have just signed speak to the depth of the relationship. These cover economic relations, development partnership, defence and security, and people-to-people contacts.

We will take our economic partnership to a new level. Today, I am pleased to announce that India will provide a Line of Credit of One Billion U.S. dollars to support expansion of Mongolia's economic capacity and infrastructure.

Supporting development of human resources is the best way to secure a nation's development. We reiterated our commitment to continue our efforts in Mongolia. India will increase the ITEC training slots for Mongolia from 150 to 200. We will also establish an India-Mongolia Joint School.

Later today I will have the pleasure to lay the foundation stone for the expansion and upgrading of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Center of Excellence for Information and Communication Technology. I will also visit the National Cancer Centre to gift Bhabhatron II. It is state of art nuclear medicine cancer therapy machine, developed and manufactured in India.

We attach high importance to our security cooperation. We will continue to participate in each other's defence exercises. The agreements today will deepen our cooperation in border security and cyber security. Cooperation between National Security Councils will provide a strategic framework for cooperation. We have also agreed that India will help establish a cyber security centre in Mongolia’s defence and security establishment.

Our trade and investment relations are modest. We recognise that there are physical limitations. But, we agreed that economic growth in our two countries is opening up new opportunities. There is huge potential in civil nuclear sector, mining, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and dairy. We should also explore the possibilities of using digital technology to expand our economic relations.

I conveyed to Prime Minister that we greatly value our international partnership, which is based on our friendship, shared spiritual heritage and democratic values. These also provide solid foundation for our cooperation in our region.

I conveyed India's sincere appreciation for Mongolia's strong support for India's permanent membership of United Nations Security Council.

In a reflection of our commitment to further deepen our relationship, we have decided to upgrade our Comprehensive Partnership to ‘Strategic Partnership’. We also agreed to renew our Treaty of Friendly Relations and Cooperation.

So, at a significant milestone in our relationship, we are starting a new era in our partnership.

I keenly look forward to the rest of my stay in Mongolia. Thank you.

Winter Exacerbates Pneumonia Threat

IN · · Leave a Comment
Winter Exacerbates Pneumonia Threat
On World Pneumonia Day, focus on Precautions and Care

Pneumonia Pneumonia is one of the most common infections of the lungs affecting mostly the very young or old, who typically have a weak immune system, making them more vulnerable to infections. In fact, Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in infants and children worldwide, claiming a whopping 1.1 million lives under the age of five years every year, according to World Health Organization. A large number of the elderly, especially those who have a chronic lung disease or those who have immune deficiency diseases like AIDS, Lupus or Arthritis, also fall prey to respiratory infection.

While the threat of pneumonia is persistent in all vulnerable people throughout the year, in winters the risk goes up because of several reasons. This is why, we need to take extra precautions in winter against pneumonia.

Pneumonia leads to inflammation of one or both lungs due to infection, making breathing difficult. Our lungs are made up of small sacs which fill with air when one breathes. Pneumonia infection causes these air sacs to be filled with pus and fluid, making breathing painful and restricting the intake of oxygen inside the body.

“Many types of organisms can cause pneumonia, but in elders, most are viruses or bacteria. The body’s immune system is best placed to fight the onslaught of these micro-organisms. In young children in whom the immune system is not completely developed, the threat of pneumonia is high. Similar is the case with the elderly. As we age, our immune system gradually loses its strength”, says Dr. Ashish Sharma, Internal Medicine, Columbia Asia Hospital – Ghaziabad.

In winters, the incidence of pneumonia rises due to several reasons:
  • Other infections like influenza and other viral infections are more common in winters. A viral infection can weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of contracting pneumonia.
  • Fog often combines with traffic smoke in winters to give rise to a layer of smog. This makes lung infections and respiratory ailments more pronounced, further making a person susceptible to pneumonia.
  • The woolens we wear harbor molds and this can be a source of allergy and aggravation of conditions leading to pneumonia
  • In cold weather, people tend to keep indoors with doors, windows and all sources of ventilation shut coupled with the use of heating facilities. Lack of air circulation can lead to increased susceptibility to respiratory disease in the elderly.
How to minimize risks:

Simple precautions and basic hygiene can markedly reduce the risk of respiratory infections including pneumonia.

  • Boost Immunity:Strengthening the body’s immune system is one of the most important thing to do. Eat vitamin and anti-oxidant rich food that equips the body against diseases. Make fruits and vegetables a part of daily life to boost your immune system. Exercise regularly and adopt practices like yoga or meditation. If necessary take vitamin c supplements for strengthening the immunity and preventing flu like infections.
  • Get yourself vaccinated: Vaccination is helpful in preventing several strains of pneumococcus bacteria. At least 20 most dangerous strains from among the 80 pneumococcus bacteria are covered by immunization. Simultaneously, since influenza in a number of cases leads to pneumonia, it is also advisable to get flu vaccination every winter. Children below 2 years of age, and elderly above 65 are specially advised immunization.
  • Keep it hygienic: Do not show laxity in keeping up yourself, your home and your accessories hygienic and germ free. Make sure you wash your hands every time you enter the house or every time you shake hands with someone. Make sure your blankets, bedding and woolens are clean and regularly aired.
  • Allow Ventilation:Aerate your home, open the windows and let some fresh air, however cool, come in with sun’s rays to keep the air dry and clean and prevent respiratory problems.
