Benefits of Diversity & Ethics at Workplace

Rajeev Bhardwaj,Vice President heads the Human Resource Department of SunLife Financial Asia Service Centre

Our workplace is where we spend almost one half of our life. After our home (some would argue, even before), workplace is the focal point around which our lives revolve. In fact, a workplace should be like a second family where every member, no matter what his or her origin or background, must feel at home. It is also a place that should teach its members, who represent it in the outside world, the absolute importance of ethical behaviour.

Why ethical behaviour and respect for diversity is important for a workplace is a subject often talked about. However, very few organizations make a deliberate and concerted effort to imbibe these two values into their blood by formalizing policies around it. Human resource professionals generally tend to be focussed on the short term ahead, target issues of immediate importance like hiring, retaining and placating. Not many reflect the foresight of looking ahead to construct an organizational fabric that cherishes diversity and make ethical behaviour the hallmark of its culture.

In today’s world of free flow of people and brain, work communities can no longer afford to be monolithic. The diversity that people of multiple origins bring to an organization is immensely enriching. The term diversity itself is an all-encompassing term that may be used to refer to the characteristics in individuals which make them all unique and different from each other. Not just race, color, gender, caste or sexual preferences, even individual personality traits add to the diversity of an organization. Some employees will be more adventurous, and advocate risk taking while others may be more cautious and may suggest safer routes. Some may be brilliant in ideation yet lax in implementation; others may be better executors.

The moral responsibility of an organization is to make sure each individual is respected for his or her abilities and not discriminated against for any reason whatsoever. The majority group should not be sidelining or undermining those in minority, men should not exercise an upper hand over women employees, or an employee’s sexual orientation doesn’t become the subject of ridicule! An organization’s work culture should be cultivated to ensure complete assimilation and acceptance so that the environment is congenial for all.

The question of assimilating diversity and using it to advantage is a burning question in many countries of Europe like France, Germany, Cyprus, Sweden etc which have witnessed a huge influx of migrants from across the world. These migrants who are providing valuable workforce to people starved nations are undoubtedly an asset to these countries. Yet, often the growing diversity presents difficulties in the form of cultural differences and preferences leading to arguments. Socially, some of these countries have seen a rise of a radical right in response to an influx of immigrants. In debt-ridden Greece, for example, an anti immigrant radical right party attracted much negative attention across the world when it offered free food to hundreds of struggling people of Athens, but strictly excluded foreigners from their aid programme.

A workplace in some ways is a microcosm of a nation, representing multiple kinds of people all under one umbrella. India is not new to diversity, yet our behavior often reflects tendencies of racial discrimination. The problems faced by people from the north eastern states in Delhi, is a case in point. An organization however should ensure that its employees do not carry such attitude to the workplace or when amongst their colleagues outside workplace. Similarly an organization’s reputation in client and customer circles has got a lot to do with work ethics and moral guidelines followed there. If your organization works by ethics, its reputation is bound to reach places much ahead of it.

An all assimilating work environment enhances productivity: If your workplace has good assimilation policies where people from all backgrounds are treated well, it will have a positive bearing on the total work environment. The more belongingness your employees feel with the organization, the more wholeheartedly they will contribute to it. Having a diversity-friendly set-up therefore helps enhance the productivity of individual employees and the entire organization.

Cultural Diversity Enriches Individuals & the Organization: Diversity doesn’t just bring together apples and oranges; it also brings together their respective cultures, practices, beliefs and work ethics. This amalgamation provides a wonderful cauldron from where new ideas and systems will originate. Working and living in a culturally diverse place is always enriching for individual employees, and it stimulates the thinking and ideation process.

Ethical Practices Mean Happy Customers: Apart from effective result delivery, what customers and clients look for in a service provider is reliability, trustworthiness and honesty. If a client trusts that you will be ethical and morally driven in whatever transactions are conducted, or whatever deals are struck, their trust will substantiate into their willingness for a longstanding and sustainable relationship.. Since, no organization desires to lose business it is imperative to understand that ethical practices help companies retain clients and produce a long-term relationship.

Adherence to Work Ethics Translates Into a Good Image: It is often stated that reputation – both good and bad – precedes a person. The same is true for an organization as well for which a good word of mouth is always desirable. In a world where unscrupulousness tends to be the norm, ethical behavior, in all streams, always impinge positively upon people. If your employees are ethical in dealing with the customers, the clients, and even fellow industrywallahs, this will translate into a good image for the company outside.

Good Reputation Attracts Good Human Resource: While your dealings with customers and clients will determine your image as a service provider; the way your employees, present and former, associate with the organization, will determine your reputation as an employer. A good and enriching work environment is what most people look for, apart from remuneration. This means the organization will attract good human resource from across the industry. There is no doubt about good human resource being a company’s biggest asset.

We at Sun Life believe in acting ethically and fostering a work environment that reflects the vibrant workforce; unique and diverse but having oneness in the way they relate to the organization. We here celebrate the life journey of our employees that is to say, we believe in making the tenure of every employee one of the best days of his life, by ensuring that his/her individuality is respected and no discrimination is there on the basis of caste, creed, religion, place of origin and beliefs or any other aspect for that matter. We have a robust Code of business conduct to guide our employees and also ensure that the managers by virtue of their position act as ethical role models. And because of this diversity of workforce and the emphasis on ethics, Sun Life is now going to complete 150 years: a glorious past and a bright future ahead. That is why we say, ’Life is brighter under the Sun.’

But … I Wish I could… Turn Back Time…

IN · · Leave a Comment
By G.Gayathri

Beautiful song by Backstreet Boys. Every person at least once in his life time would have thought this, I wish I could turn back time, it may seem impossible but I wish I could, and life will never be the same.

Usually this kind of thinking and thoughts come to our mind when we are not happy with our present state of mind and life. It is only then that we start looking back into our past searching for the right times and the good or happy times. Or to put it in a better way we want to take a corrective action so that our life would change its direction for betterment.

But we can only do that in imagination but not in reality. There is definitely one-thing in our hands that we can do make our life better and to feel happy in the situation that we are in.

Turn Back Time
That is to imagine our life from the point of view of future. Imagine yourself standing ahead in life five years or ten years from now, from that point of time if you think of today, how would you lead your life?

What changes do you want to make in yourself and in your life style? What kind of decisions would you take, and how would you utilize the time that you have at present in your hands?

If we try to forget our past, live in the present and think about our future life would always be full of hope and positivity, because it lies in your hands to create your future by acting in the right way now.

So it definitely makes sense to live in the present and to lay a good foundation for our future instead of pondering over I could have or I should have.

All the wise men of the world have said that real wisdom lies in living life as if you are going to die the next moment. Yes that is real living, living life each and every moment with no regrets or tensions because who knows may be this is the last moment and we are no fools to spend it crying or feeling tensed.

Right, so if you are a seeker of happiness and peace and want to live life full and complete, forget the past because it has already passed and has no existence and live this moment full and if possible think good and positively about the future because it makes sense to do so.

A Quote worth Contemplating

IN · · Leave a Comment
hard work
Quotes are one of the many sources of inspiration. They are life’s essence in short and it is very important that we make it a habit to read a t least a new daily this will enlighten us.

We read many quotes and hear them also but there will be some which will strike straight at heart and you will never forget them. Some time such quotes change your entire perspective of life.

I heard one quote in a movie which is by Yendamuri Veerendranath it goes like this “life is not a key that you keep it in some one’s hand and sleep peacefully” what more can anyone say in short about the value of ‘your’ life. This is a quote which I will never forget in my life.

Yes, many of us depend on others for each and every thing and every minor and major decision in life which is not a right thing.

God has blessed us each and every one of us with brains and wisdom so that we can think what is good for us and then act in such a way.

There is no harm in taking others opinions and consulting someone, but it is not at all good to depend on others when it comes to life changing decisions.

It is easy to put the burden of our life on someone else and live a carefree life, but to take the responsibility of your behavior, of your decisions and ultimately of your life into your own hands, and accepting the results whatever they are instead of putting the blame on someone else is a thing that everyone must learn.

As long as you don’t value yourself, know your worth, and the value of your life, you will never live your life, you will be a puppet in someone else’s hand.

But the day you recognize your own worth, you give value to yourself and start living life that way that is the day when you started living ‘your’ life. So, take time and think about this.

Ways to Detect and Handle Manipulative People

IN · · Leave a Comment
Manipulation is basically, emotional exploitation of the other person, with intentions take control of other person, to seize his powers and to benefit from him at his expense. This is certainly not the right thing to happen to anyone. But in today’s time we find more such people, whose intentions are only to make use of the other person for the benefit of the self.

If there is definitely something we can do about this, it is to gain knowledge about such persons about their characteristics and to safeguard ourselves and our loved ones from such persons. Let us have a look at those characteristics.

Majority of the manipulative people have the common characteristics.

1. These people very well know the ways to find out other person’s weaknesses.

2. After they detect your weakness they use it against you to weaken you and to strengthen themselves.

3. They make the other person sacrifice his/her own personal preferences and interests, and make him/her work for their benefit.

4. Once they gain success in manipulating the other person, then they never stop exploiting them until and unless the other person becomes aware of this and decides to put a full stop.

Once you detect such a person, you can take certain measures to protect yourself from them, let us have a look at them.

1. The first and the foremost is to remember your basic rights as human. As long as, one does not harm others he has every right to protect himself and his basic rights. You are in charge if your life not the other person, remember this.

2. Manipulative people act differently with every person and in every situation. They show extremes in behavior, being polite with one and rude to other and much such behavioral opposition. So, as far as possible avoid them, if it is not possible in such cases maintain a distance.

3. Manipulative people’s main intention is to make you feel low so that you can surrender to them and do whatever they say. In such a situation see if the relationship is one sided or give and take. If it is not from both sides and you are the one to change yourself and surrender yourself every time it’s time for reality check.

4. Don’t just agree to whatever such person says if you think something is wrong question back and allow them to introspect.

5. Manipulative people also always insist on instantly giving your opinion or decision and will not give you time to think. In such cases pass away the situation by telling them that you will think about it.

These are just some of the techniques that you can use to protect yourself and safeguard your interests from manipulative people. So, go ahead and stand up for your rights and live your life.

multitasking
These days, there is a lot of buzz about multitasking. In the beginning multitasking was considered an advantage and then slowly, people started noticing the other side of the coin. Let us take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages about multitasking.

Before we jump into that, we need to know what exactly does multi tasking mean. Multi tasking is performing more than two number of tasks simultaneously.

First let us take a look at some of the advantages of multitasking.

  1. Multitasking is helpful when doing simple tasks. For example while talking to someone over the phone you can do some other work simultaneously. For example you can check your mails while talking on phone or you may listen to music or any other audios of your choice, when doing work either at home or at office.
  2. Most of the times we post pone doing things because of the amount of work especially we don’t begin doing some things because we think it may take lot of time. In such cases multitasking is useful. Even in little quantity if you start doing those works apart from the routine, you will be able to complete them, instead of doing not starting them at all.
  3. Today’s life is very demanding, if we wait to complete one task and then start doing the other. We may not find time to do some tasks at all.
  4. Multitasking teaches us to cope with stressful situation. Especially when you have the burden all on yourself and need to handle things alone.
  5. Multitasking expands our horizons of knowledge and skill.

Disadvantages of multitasking

  1. Studies show that there is a serious effect on productivity by switching from one task to other. The person’s performance ability slows down at a great rate when they have to switch between the tasks.
  2. It has also been found in many researches that a lot of time is wasted, in the process of switching from one task to another.
  3. Research shows that the actual process of shifting our focus from one task to other especially when lot of concentration levels are required, has a lot of psychological pressure as continuous shifting means you have to change your mindset every time for the other role, on and off.
  4. Multitasking keeps one busy all the time but when it comes to results there will hardly be any accomplishments to show as none of the tasks will be completely done.
  5. Multitasking leads to inefficiency. Like answering phone calls, attending to messages and checking mails once in a while, working on a project leads to inefficiency.
In essence multitasking is good when doing simple things. Tasks that don’t require lot of concentration or attention. But while doing those works which need your attention and concentration totally, multitasking is definitely not a thing to do.
