Odissi Performance Regales Audience at Old Fort Dance Festival

IN · · Leave a Comment
Odissi Performance
New Delhi, Oct 11, 2015:  Veteran Odissi exponent and Padma Shri Madhvi Mudgal and her group of dancers performed at the Old Fort Dance Festival today, bringing alive the oldest surviving dance form of India for Delhi’s connoisseurs of classical dance.

Presented by the Sahitya Kala Parishad & Department of Art, Culture & Languages, Government of Delhi, the Old Fort Dance Festival is showcasing some of India’s most treasured classical dance forms.

The festival, that will end tomorrow, has been much appreciated and loved by the audience who have turned out in good numbers every day. The majestic ruins of Delhi’s Purana Qila have provided a fine ambience to this unique festival celebrating India’s classical dance forms.

The five-day festival of choreographies in classical dance forms has seen participation of veteran and legendary dance artists and their groups in multiple dance forms including Bharati Shivaji, Raja and Radha Reddy, among others. Legendary Kathak exponent Pandit Birju Maharaj will perform with his group on the last day of the festival.

On the sidelines of the festival, critically acclaimed artist Manav Gupta is displaying his latest installation – a waterfront of Ganga made out of chilams and diyas which are elements of nature. He has been working since long to create public art sculptures that generate concern towards sustainability. “This innovative art practice with potter’s clay (chilams and diyas) represents the tool as a means of getting intoxicated with the rain of love and also explores sustainable development”, says Mr. Gupta.

“The repertoire of Indian classical dances represents centuries of culture and tradition that has been preserved and sustained by generations of devoted exponents and earnest artists. Across the globe, Indian classical dance forms are appreciated and loved by dance lovers. Such festivals help extend the reach of classical dance forms to not just connoisseurs of dance but also to common people,” says Pandit Birju Maharaj.

“The idea behind the Old Delhi Dance Festival to juxtapose cultural heritage with structural heritage is a wonderful concept. The Purana Qila presents a poignant background to the performance of India’s most notable classical dance forms, some of whom originated centuries back in ancient and medieval times,” says Ms Leela Samson.

The festival will end with a performance of Kathak choreographed by none other than Pandit Birju Maharaj and his Group. The legendary exponent of Kathak has received numeours accolades over the years including Padma Vibhushan, sangeet Natak Academi Award and the prestigious Kalidas Samman.

Budget Reaction Quote By Dr Rajeev K Sharma

IN · · Leave a Comment
Dr Rajeev K Sharma, Senior Orthopedic Specialist & Joint Replacement Surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi

Dr Rajeev K Sharma, Senior Orthopedic Specialist & Joint Replacement Surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi says,
"The most notable part of the budget announcements on the healthcare sector is of course on the health insurance front. We have seen people lose their savings, become indebted and bankrupt to meet healthcare exigencies in the family and we as healthcare providers strongly believe that penetration of health insurance should increase in India. In this direction, increasing of the tax exemption for health insurance is a welcome measure.

"Another welcome announcement is about establishment of more AIIMS like institutions. There is also this initiative by the FM about a new scheme of providing physical aids for senior citizens below poverty line. This is encouraging too. But in India, the devil lies in the implementation. We hope these positive initiatives are implemented with speed and effectiveness.

"The budget’s overall emphasis on cleanliness initiatives in line with the Swatch Bharat Campaign seems fresh and positive. I am particularly happy about the target of 6 crore new toilets. This is a major healthcare issue and I happy that in the past few years our public policy and awareness initiatives have started giving this issue its due.

For me personally, art is a medium to spread hope, inspiration and optimism,” says Ekta Jain.

Letting the Girl Child Live: Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon celebrates Children’s Day

IN · · Leave a Comment
Letting the Girl Child Live: Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon celebrates Children’s Day differently! Talks about ‘SHE’- the Girl Child!
  • Through Painting and Declamation competition, Paras Hospitals organized a platform for the children to speak their mind on what they feel about the inhuman practice of female foeticide and infanticide.
  • Children from schools across Gurgaon come together to celebrate Children’s Day and exhort their parents’ generation to junk the abhorrent practice
Gurgaon: Can we call ourselves a civilized society as long as the despicable practice of killing the female foetus remains rampant amidst us? Can we celebrate Children’s Day without turning our thoughts to the millions of girl children who have been killed in their mother’s womb? These questions were at the heart of a two-day programme organized by Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon to invite children into a movement for change.

Children from schools across Gurgaon came together to celebrate this Children’s Day differently – by devoting their time and energies to express their thoughts about the illegal yet common practice of sex selection in our society.
Paras HospitalsIt is to be noted that Haryana is among the Indian states which have the worst women to men sex ratios in India. In fact, in the 2011 Census, Haryana had the ignominy of having the lowest child sex ratio among all states with just 834 girls for each 1,000 boys in the age group of 0-6 year.

‘SHE’ is an initiative of Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon that aims to create awareness against the evil of female foeticide by engaging schools and touching the lives of the next generation so that they know what is right and what is wrong. Paras Hospitals campaign- SHE aimed at involving the generation next – the school children- to discuss and have an opinion against female infanticide and foeticide.

On Wednesday (Nov 12), a painting competition was organized at various school premises where participating children were asked to draw their hearts out, expressing the theme of ‘Save the Girl Child’. Children came out with remarkable expressions of brush to express their disgust at the inhuman practice followed by their parents’ generation. The painting contest was followed by a Declamation Competition on Nov 13, where children were encouraged to speak about ‘What Can I do to Stop female Infanticide’.

“Female infanticide is a social issue and cannot be dealt with legal instruments alone. We have to work as a community at different levels to get rid of this abhorrent practice that has been responsible for a silent genocide of our unborn girls. This evil can be rooted out only when we as a people junk the preference for the male child and start believing that foeticide is as wrong as murder,” says Dr Kousar Ali Shah, Zonal Director , Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon, who headed the initiative.

The declamation & painting competition was judged by prominent social workers who work at the grass root level for woman empowerment. Ms Poornima Savargaonkar, a former ISRO scientist was invited who at present is associated with NGO – Uthaan. Ms Poornima is associated with the rural women of the area and has taken up numerous initiatives for women empowerment; Ms Deepa Antil, President SNP-Sashakt Nari Parishad, Gurgaon; and Dr Rakhee Gogoi, HOD, Radiology at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon also acted as judges to decide the winners of the competitions.

“We believe it is imperative for children to be involved in such a campaign as they are our next generation. It is they who will decide the future course that our society takes on this issue and it will help if they grow up believing that killing the girl child is a horrendous practice. As a community health provider, it is our duty to do whatever we can to engage the community in productive and pertinent discussions. This is why we believe that celebrating Children’s Day by highlighting one of the most significant issues facing our children is the right thing to do,” says Dr Rakhee Gogoi, HOD Radiology, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon

She also added that , “ We as healthcare providers and doctors have a major role to play. Female infanticide may be carried out due to society pressure and miscreant behaviors, however a doctor- sonologist – plays a very important role. The government has over the years has developed strong practices against sex determination, however a gap still exists. We as professionals also have a social responsibility and hence we should all stand against this social evil. It is we after all who decide the change and this change is for the better. “

At the twin competitions held at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon, children took to different expressions to convey their thoughts about this pertinent question. Most of them went back believing strongly that an evil is rampant in their society, and they need to do their part in abolishing it.

Bikers for Good
New Delhi, August 24, 2014: How many times have you seen a biker hugging a policeman? How many times have you seen a biker thanking him for his diligence, instead of racing away? Today, the 24th of August, the Biker Fraternity did the impossible.

In a one-of-its-kind ride initiated by Bikers for Good, a Motorcycle Community that rides solely for social causes, more than 15 Biking clubs from Delhi came together to send out a message of appreciation and respect for the Delhi Police.

Commenting on the idea behind the ride, Mohit Ahuja, Founder of Bikers for Good said, “The public is there to protest and criticize the police when they fail to do something. We planned this ride to thank them for taking care of the city, through thick and thin.”

The ride saw close to 500 bikers riding to Jantar Mantar riding bikes ranging from 100cc to 1000cc and above. Together the bikers gave a message of responsibility towards safer roads. The admin of Bikers for Good, Jeet Kandhari quoted, “Biking today is growing. Motorcycle Clubs have members who are students, doctors, CEOs and even higher. Doing something like this will only help us better terms between bikers and the police.”

The bikers gathered to thank Delhi Police and Delhi Traffic Police for their efforts. A huge banner with the club logos was put up, where bikers wrote their messages for the Delhi Police. This banner was later presented to Mr. Ajay Kumar Singh, S.H.O., Parliament Street, Delhi. Moreover, Bikers were seen hugging Delhi Police personnel and carrying placards that read FREE HUGS FOR DELHI POLICE.

With this ride, Bikers for Good marked another milestone in its journey of doing GOOD. The only community in India to ride solely for Social Causes, Bikers for Good promotes safety amongst bikers and stands up for various social causes. In less than 3 years of its existence, Bikers for Good has grown to be a 5000 member community across India, helping out more than 3 Lakh people. It is said that with great power comes great responsibility and Bikers for Good is living up to the statement.
